Carry on this Summer with Cranberry Cocktails

Cranberry juice is one of the most popular cocktail mixers, one that is versatile enough to bring together a variety of flavors. Often, cranberry is that one key ingredient that is the finishing touch. A splash can be paired with tequila, whiskey, gin, vodka or rum and almost any flavor of liqueur.

Cranberry is probably best known as an essential in the popular Cosmopolitan and Cape Cod and if you want to experiment with your own cranberry cocktails, check out the delicious blend made even better with the addition of cranberry juice; the perfect choice for your next cocktail party!



  • 1 1/2  parts Smirnoff vodka
  • 1/2  part triple sec
  • 1/2  part vermouth
  • 2  parts cranberry juice
  • Cocktail glass


Shake them well in a shaker and serve in a pre freeze martini glass.

Sparkling Cranberry Splash


  • 1 bottle(s) vinho verde, chilled
  • 1/3 cup(s) cranberry-juice cocktail
  • Crushed ice
  • 3  ripe white peaches (optional), sliced
  • Mint sprigs (optional)


In a large pitcher, combine wine and cranberry-juice cocktail. Divide crushed ice and wine mixture among glasses. Garnish each glass with sliced peaches and a sprig of mint, if desired.

Martini Recipes for all Different Taste Buds!

Spicy Jalapeno Martini

12 oz vodka
1/2 jalapeno, sliced
1/2 inch piece of ginger, finely sliced
1 inch piece lemongrass
slice of jalapeno, to garnish


Into a glass jug, combine all ingredients (except the ice).
Cover with plastic wrap/ cling film and refrigerate overnight to allow flavors to infuse the vodka. Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Add infused martini to the cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for 15 seconds. Strain into a martini glass and serve with a slice of jalapeno either on the side of the glass or sitting in the bottom of the glass (where the olive usually is!).

Bitter Balsamic Vinegar Martini

3 shots of your favorite Vodka.
3 ml of good balsamic vinegar (about a dash, experiment to find what is just right for you).
1 large juicy strawberry.
some orange rind.

In a bowl or plate, add the balsamic vinegar. We are going to roll the strawberry in this container, so you just need enough room to accomodate the strawberry. Take the strawberry and roll it in the vinegar from the previous step. Try to cover the whole strawberry, then put into frozen glass. Add the Vodka to the chilled martini glass. Squeeze the orange rind on top of the glass so the juice goes into the glass. Rub the rind all around the rim to give it an orange flavour.

Cool Saketini

3/4 oz Sake
3/4 oz Vodka
1/4 oz Gin
1 slice cucumber

Into a mixing glass filled with ice, pour the Sake, Vodka and Gin. Stir vigorously to ensure the contents are well mixed. Pour and strain into a frosted martini glass. To finish, arrange the cucumber onto the rim of the glass.

Sour Pineapple Martini

2 ounces vodka
1 ounce apple schnapps
1/2 ounce pineapple juice
1 thin apple slice for garnish

Combine ingredients (except garnish) with cracked ice and shake it up till ice cold. Serve in a martini glass.

Refreshing Watermellon Martini

4 cups watermelon (with the rinds, seeds removed)
1 cup lemon vodka
1/2 cup cointreau or triple sec
2 limes, squeezed
1 cup ice cubes
1 tablespoon sugar (or sugar substitute)
Garnish; pieces of watermelon, lime, sugar cane

In a blender, combine the watermelon chunks and puree. Remove pureed fruit and pour into a pitcher and keep very cold, even a little frozen to make it icy. Add one cup of watermelon puree, 1/4 cup of lemon vodka, and one tablespoon of triple sec to the blender with three ice cubes and blend. Garnish with watermelon chunks, limes and a stick of sugar cane.

Sweet Pecan Pie Martini

1/2 teaspoon dark corn syrup
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1/8 cup pecans, toasted and finely chopped
For Martini
Ice cubes
2 ounces vodka
1/4 cup dark corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Garnish: On a small plate, stir together corn syrup and the brown sugar. Dip the rims of martini glasses in the mixture, then in the chopped nuts.
Martini: In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine vodka, corn syrup and vanilla. Strain into prepared glasses.

However, this method is a hit at parties and with tourists, and there is an order that should be followed for it to make sense. Decent gold or silver tequila is best; avoid the cheaper brands which almost certainly bring on hangovers.


  • 1 1/2 oz tequila
  • lemon or lime wedge
  • 1 pinch of salt


  1. Moisten the back of your hand below the index finger (usually by licking) and pour on the salt.
  2. Lick the salt off your hand.The salt lessens the burn of the tequila.
  3. Drink the tequila.
  4. Quickly bite the lemon or lime wedge. The sour fruit balances and enhances the flavor of the tequila.

  • Acidity (an acidic wine may pair best with a fruit dish, which also has natural acidity),
  • Intensity (the more intense the flavors of a dessert, the more intense the wine), and
  • Sweetness (a dessert wine should be sweeter than the dessert itself).

Dessert impresario Gale Gand, ofChicago’s TRU recommends focusing on the different dessert categories when selecting wine. In general, as the colors of the dessert get darker, the wine gets darker. Here is a guide to wine pairings with each of the major dessert genres:

Custard and Vanilla

Desired Flavors (in the wine and dessert): Mild, light, buttery

Suggested Wine Pairings: White wines (late-harvest Riesling), sparkling wines like demi-sec champagne, and Asti Spumanti.

Fruit and Spice

Desired Flavors (in the wine and dessert): Apples, pears, cinnamon

Suggested Wine Pairings: White wines and pink champagne.

Caramels and Chocolates

Desired Flavors (in the wine and dessert): Dark, buttery, caramelized, rich.

Suggested Wine Pairings: Red wine (like late-harvest Pinot Noir, Banyuls, Grenache, Australian Shiraz), port (the classic chocolate pairing), and Grappa.

No Desserts

For a brew freak like us one of our simplest pleasures is a pint of good beer at the nearest Lounge. And guess who we need to thank for it? Women ! Did you know that  the simplest pleasure would ne’er have existed, without the enterprising skills of women? 

From 4000 BC to 21000 BC, the Sumerians spearheaded a culture crusade to firmly embed beer forever in human consciousness. Ninkashi, the patron Goddess of beer, was the Sumerian goddess of brewing and beer and head brewer tto the Gods themselves.

She, in turn, appointed very hot women as master brewers and beer priestesses. Yes, its  true, early brewers were principally women, not only because it was considered to be a women’s job but we are pretty sure men over 3,800 years ago, had yet to realize the pleasure of brewing beer.

By the start of Industrial revolution, new techniques of making beer evolved and they din’t need a woman’s touch any more.  While beer may not be pink, terribly sweet or even weight reducing, plenty of women drink beer! And craft brewers are slowly realizing that. Women love beer. May be differently  from their male counterparts, but they still love it as fervently. The only difference, however, is that beer-loving women drink less than their male counterparts.

When they do drink, its often in the context of fine dining or entertaining, and many of them select their  beers to complement the meal, So, if you think women are an insignificant part of the beer pie, keep this in mind- if they found a beer they cherish – women are far less cost conscious than men about the price of beer.  They are also more likely than men to try new styles or brands of beer  with an open mind, and be more vocal when disappointed.

In the past, most beer makers forced women to drink the same beer that was target at men. Fortunately today, beer brands are looking at this untapped segment with glee!

How to Infuse Vodka with Fresh New Flavors!!

For flavorful mixed drinks, or a simple sip, try vodka infused with seasonal fruits and herbs. Here’s how to do it.

Humans have been making and drinking alcohol for hundreds of years. But the earliest spirits weren’t exactly smooth or even palatable. (Drinkers must have been pretty cold or pretty thirsty to have reached for a glass.) Back in the day, to make drinks tastier our Eastern European comrades began flavoring vodka with anything and everything they could find, including herbs, vegetables and fruits. Pyotr Smirnov, founder of the eponymous brand, according to Linda Himelstein, author of The King of Vodka, had hundreds of recipes for flavoring his vodkas.

Thankfully the production of vodka has come a long way, but flavored versions of the spirit are, of course, still popular. Just as vodka amplifies flavors in a cocktail, it’s the perfect neutral base for making infusions. (It’s no wonder liquor store shelves are filled with dozens of different types of vodkas.) But flavoring vodka is incredibly easy and allows you to be wildly creative.

Start by filling a sealable glass jar halfway with seasonal sliced fruit, herbs or vegetables. Try these flavors for different seasons:

Winter: kumquats, Meyer lemons, oranges, tangerines and guava
Spring: cherries, kiwis, strawberries, plums and apricots
Summer: raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and peaches
Fall: apples, pears, rhubarb and persimmons.

You can also use dried, unsweetened fruit that will rehydrate. (Once the vodka is ready, reserve them for cocktail garnishes.) Fresh ginger, horseradish root, herbs (like tarragon) and even tea also work well. Next fill the jar to about three-quarters with good unflavored vodka and seal it. Taste the spirit daily until you like the flavor. Once it’s ready, strain the liquid into a clean bottle. Stored in the fridge, your creation should last for a couple of weeks before losing flavor, and it will taste great in shots and cocktails. Let’s drink to your health!
